Mother to denounce the Department of Education |

Can it be that gaining a post at the local Catholic school in Motril is becoming as difficult as getting into Cambridge? It would appear so, according to mother Leticia Tirado whose three-year-old was literally turned away from the school gates. Threatened with having the local police summoned to physically remove the child from the school line should she not comply with the school (San Agustín)’s wishes, the mother has now decided that there is no option but to denounce the Department of Education.
It’s not just families in Britain that have to play this game of having the ‘correct’ address to get children into the ‘right’ schools. Parents will go to any lengths to beat the system and ensure their child’s place. In this case, however, the child was actually living in the zone which corresponded to the school catchment area in Motríl, but the ‘empadronamiento’ (resident registration) had been changed whilst the parents were getting divorced. Hence the confusion, with the school saying they would take action and the child herself ultimately paying the price in lack of confidence and sleepless nights. In fact, it’s come to the point where even if her little girl were asked back, mother Leticia would not accept the placement because of the way they were treated. As far as the Headmaster Father Epi is concerned, however, there wasn’t nearly as much fuss made over a child who was asked to leave last year under similar circumstances. Can’t say that I would be pleased if she were my child, either!
