Torrenueva (Motril)
A small linear town between the Mediterranean and the foothills of the Sierra de Lujar mountain range, Torrenueva is just ten minutes drive from the bustling town of Motril. Its main attraction is its beautiful beach, which stretches nearly 3km with a promenade, and is popular with locals and tourists alike in the summer. Despite its small size, Torrenueva is an autonomous area within Motril and has its own town hall (ayuntamiento) housed in a grand building with a large clock tower. The town is unusual in that it is bisected by the N340 motorway

History
Torrenueva gets its name from its defensive tower-watch tower built in the 18th century to guard against the French. These towers were originally known as a torre-atalaya defensiva (defensive towers used for military purposes rather than as a dwelling). The tower can still be seen in Torrenueva today although now it is now part of a children’s park rather than an imposing defence against invaders!Attractions
In addition to the tower, Torrenueva has a church, la iglesia and an ancient 'Aljiber' for storing water which are also worth viewing. Each year on July 16th the village celebrates the festival of the Virgin Carmen when a statue of the virgin is paraded by boat in the shallow waters all along the beach. The water procession is followed by fireworks and partying.Images from Torrenueva (Motril)
