Cortes De Baza
Cortes de Baza is a municipality located in the north of the province of Granada along the eastern banks of the Rio Castril. It has been the site of human settlement since prehistory. It has been settled by Romans, Moors and later by the Christians after the Reconquista of Andalucía in the fifteenth century. According to the 2005 census, the town has a population of 2335 inhabitants. Although most of the town's people live in traditional town houses a growing number of cave houses are being renovated and occupied by tourists as well as permanent residents of different nationalities.
Cortes de Baza has a fine example of a sixteenth century church built in the Mudéjar style constructed by Moorish Craftsmen. The town is probably one most unspoiled in the area with nice open spaces and tree lined streets. It has a swimming pool that would be envied by most other towns which is open during July and August.
The town is very rural with Farming and Poplar tree plantations covering a wide area along the river valley, tourism is also becoming a main source of income. They are some outstanding views and areas to walk and cycle in this area. The Lake Negratin one of the largest reservoirs in Granada is very close by, as well as Mount Jabalcon and the Sierra de Baza.
Cortes de Baza has its annual fiesta in August every year, the town is then full to bursting point and very lively. At most other times despite having several bars and all the other amenities you could want the town is very peaceful and trouble free. The local population are friendly and always willing to help anyone, although very few speak or understand English.
The town is 701 meters above sea-level so during the winter can become very cold at night, and have the occasional heavy snowfall. But generally it is sunny and very warm during the day all year round.
