Albuñuelas
Albuñuelas is situated on the E - 4 the European walking route from Spain to Greece, at the head of the Lecrin Valley in Granada. Comprising three neighbourhoods or barrios: Alto , Bajo and Fernán Núñez the latter known locally as La Loma (the Hill). It has evidence of Moorish occupation seen in the Torre del Tio Bayo, an eight metre high tower constructed about the middle of the fourteenth century.
The village has nursery, primary, junior and adult education centres. There is a: town hall, surgery, chemist, municipal hall, gym, undertaker, olive mill, church, cemetery, bank, bazaar, disco bar, summer bar, cafe bar, 2 restaurant bars, 2 clothes' shops, 2 tobacconists, 2 hermitages, 3 bakers, 3 grocers, and guided horseback and walking trails.
Depending on the season, you will see the following crops grown in the tiny fields surrounding the village:- broad bean, chic-pea, runner bean, French bean, potato, lettuce, carrot, cabbage, thistle (the stalk is eaten), everlasting spinach, radish, lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, satsuma, fig, artichoke, olive, pomegranate, prickly pear (don't touch), pear, apple, membrillo, aubergine, pepper, chilli, turnip, onion, garlic, avocado, tomato, cucumber, plum, peach, nectarine, cherry, raspberry, marrow, radish, melon, gourd, artichoke, walnut, nispero, persimmon, almond, sweet corn, grape, sugar cane, ornamental flowers, alfalfa, grasses and cereals. Although some of the old timers may still be seen working the land by hand and mule power more mechanical cultivators are now used.
Pine almonds and olives form the main economic activity, on the surrounding Sierras de Albuñuelas, which rise to 1426m at Pozo de Herrero. Here you may see animals which include wild boar, mountain goat and deer, added to which there is a multitude of reptiles, butterflies, moths and insects. You may even encounter snakes and whilst we can't claim any endemic bird species, there are 4/5 of the raptors breeding successfully along with another 120 species in recorded sightings.
