Alpujarra protest over Alsina closure in Órgiva |

Open over 90 years ago, the Órgiva office for the transport company ALSA (used to be Alsina Graells) is now under threat to be shut down on January 1st. More than 100 people turned up with placards to protest peacefully against the closure of this office, as it has served locals so well as a daily public means of transport.
Elderly and disabled travellers affected
As local spokesperson Rafael Estévez pointed out, since early last century, the Órgiva stop was the local head quarters for the Alpujarra. All the buses working their way through the Costa Tropical along to Motríl would stop here, making it a real convergence point for information, ticket sales, waiting room, come parcel office and message centre, not to mention essential access to the Alpujarras. Always good value, it served as the nucleus for many passengers and contributed to the development of the local economy. Now, given the economic downturn, the company is rationalising its spending and after Lanjarón, the Órgiva base seems likely to be cut out, unless the decision is overturned or central government comes up with some kind of ‘rescue plan’.
