During September Federico García Lorca Airport which services the Granada province and beyond, registered 20,000 passengers less than the same period in 2007. In contrast to summer trends, this was mostly due to the budget airline Vueling removing its flights from the Granada based airport and thereby preventing travellers from connecting directly with Paris and Rome.
The reduction in flights comes at a time when passenger lists are already down and Ryan Air, amongst others, is considering cutting back even further on connections with Frankfurt and additional European routes. Worrying news, when Aena (the Spanish Airport Navigation Authority) has remarked that the low cost airlines represent some 50% of air traffic at the Granada base. And anyone who has ever used this convenient airport, will know just how uncomplicated travelling should be. Unsurprisingly, the drop in figures also shows a reaction to the current global economic crisis, combined with a rise in prices due to fuel costs and tax increases. Fortunately, looking at the year on year change from 2007 to 2008, travellers are still swearing by Granada airport's no-fuss approach to travel and showing their patronage with an overall uplift of 9.3%.
