Rice banned in Cádiz
November 9, 2007 | Regional NewsCOUNCIL officials in Cádiz have banned rice at weddings in the city.
Throughout Spain rice is thrown at the bride and groom as the newlyweds exit the wedding venue.
Now, Partido Popular councillors have voted to outlaw the tradition, claiming it has led to an increase of pigeons in the Andaluz city.
“Local churches also want a ban on the throwing of rice,” Cádiz mayor José Blas Fernández said.
Some locals have slammed the decision, calling it “absurd.”
